As Sioux Falls continues its rapid expansion, adding nearly 38,000  new residents over the last eight years, the landscape of our city is shifting. While recent data from the Sioux Falls Police Department shows a welcome five-year low in violent crime, every growing city has its pockets of concern. Whether you're looking to plant roots in a quiet cul-de-sac or curious about the more "sketchy" blocks often discussed on social media, understanding the crime map is essential.

  1. Prairie Hills - Located in south-central Sioux Falls, this is widely considered the premier "safe haven" in the city. Key Schools: Endeavor Elementary, Adventure Elementary, and Harrisburg Horizon High School.
  2. Tuthill Park - Near the Big Sioux River, this neighborhood is established, quiet, and always ranks high for safety. Key Schools: John Harris Elementary, Patrick Henry Middle School, and Lincoln High School, widely regarded as the best Public High School in the state.
  3. Spellerberg Park/McKennan Park - These historic areas near the heart of Sioux Falls are highly sought after and maintain very low crime rates despite their central location. Key Schools: Sonia Sotomayor Elementary (Spanish Immersion) and Robert Frost Elementary (home to the Challenge Center for gifted students). It also feeds into Edison Middle School.
  4. Chery Creek - On the west side, this area is a favorite for families, specifically because of its reputation for safety and low traffic. Key Schools: Discovery Elementary and Memorial Middle School. Most students here will move on to Roosevelt High School.
  5. Copper Creek - Over on the east side near Dawley Farms, this newer development is known for being a very secure, community-oriented pocket of town. Key Schools: This neighborhood (while in Sioux Falls) is technically served by the Brandon Valley School District. Key schools include Inspiration Elementary, Fred Assam Elementary, and Brandon Valley High School.

5 Most "Active" Neighborhoods (Higher Crime Rates)

Note: The Sioux Falls Police Department recently reported a 5-year low in violent crime, so even these areas are seeing improvements.

  1. Pettigrew Heights - This is the most frequently cited "dangerous" neighborhood in local discourse. It has the highest density of calls for service, particularly for property crimes and disturbances. Areas of Optimism: Pettigrew Heights is quite possibly the most tight-knit community in the entire city and is fighting hard to change the narrative. A great example of that is the Pettigrew Heights Neighborhood Association.

  2. Whittier - Just northeast of downtown, this area is beautiful and historic, but struggles with higher rates of theft and reported incidents compared to the outskirts. Areas of Optimism: The Whittier Middle School Project is a huge plus for the neighborhood, and it recently announced expansion plans.

  3. The North End (Near Smithfield) - This industrial/residential mix often sees higher activity levels, particularly regarding property-related offenses. Areas of Optimism: The City of Sioux Falls is continuing to develop the "Steel District" and around the Levitt Shell. Because of this, the North End is seeing a lot of trickle-down improvement. And it's always a plus having Falls Park nearby.

  4. Emerson - Located just south of the Falls Park area, this neighborhood frequently appears in police logs for "nuisance" calls and domestic incidents. Areas of Optimism: Another neighborhood close to Falls Park. While the crime logs certainly show activity, Emerson is also where some of the city's most unique historic homes are being restored by young professionals.

  5. Central Sioux Falls (The "Downtown Core") - While it's great for nightlife, the high foot traffic naturally leads to higher reported crime numbers (mostly theft and public intoxication) compared to residential zones. Areas of Optimism: This is the cultural and culinary hub of the region. If you're looking for some of the best (and most unique) restaurants in the city, head to Central Sioux Falls.

From Frybread to Pheasants - Here are South Dakota's Official State Things

Every state in our nation has chosen things that represent the state in one way or another to be official state things. Like a flower, or animal. South Dakota is no different.

The Mount Rushmore has a state flower. But did you know we also have a state tree and a state fish? Yes, we even have a state code.

Here is what we have so far in Wyoming. Thanks to the South Dakota Secretary of State's Office for the info:
