PIERRE, S.D. (AP) — A Pierre policeman has been named officer of the year by the South Dakota Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Ladies Auxiliary.

KCCR radio reports that Richard Bauman received the award in recognition of his bravery. Pierre Police Chief Dave Panzer says that Bauman was honored for saving a life.

Pierre Mayor Laurie Gill says the community is fortunate to have officers like Bauman.
