Now here is some weight loss news I can use! Not one, but two, two studies confirm that not only is wine good for you, it is also good for your waistline! Full disclosure here though; the Washington State University study wasn't specifically studying the effects of wine on weight loss, but the polyphenols (an anti-oxidant) contained in berries, grapes and other fruits which are used to make your favorite Cabs, Pinots and Merlots.

The Harvard study (which included specific research on wine consumption) was a lengthy one, encompassing 20,000 women over a 13 year timespan and one of the findings which was truly spectacular was that women who drank two glasses of wine daily, were 70% less likely to be overweight.

Yet a third study from the University of Arizona published in the Journal on Aging revealed that the polyphenol resveratrol (found in red wine) can curb appetite, extend life and enhance learning ability. At least it did in the honeybees they were studying and the results so impressed them that they continue to study this in hopes that the results can and will extend to humans.

So, exactly how does all of this translate into; drinking wine before bed helping you to lose weight? (Hold on, I'm getting to it!) The Washington State University study found that the resveratrol in red wine converts "white fat" into "beige fat" (which you burn much more easily). Now if I'm following this logic correctly; these studies all indicate that the polyphenol resveratrol can also be an effective appetite suppressant.  Drinking wine before bed may stop that late night fridge grazing.

But let's say you're not a fan of red wine, the even better news is that by hiking up your intake of fruits containing resveratrol to about 12 ounces (two or three daily servings) you may have even more impressive results. Why? The fruits which contain this magic polyphenol deliver much larger doses of it than wine does, as much of the resveratrol is lost in the processing of the liquid nirvana.

Actually all fruits contain resveratrol and many other beneficial polyphenols, but these have very high concentrations of it; grapes,strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, and apples. So eat grapes with that glass of wine and you'll really be on the right track!
