Opposition Mounts to Quarry Expansion in Black Hills
RAPID CITY, S.D. (AP) — Opposition is mounting to the proposed expansion of a limestone quarry in western South Dakota's Black Hills that's on the main tourist route to Mount Rushmore National Memorial.
Iowa-based concrete supplier Croell Redi-Mix Inc. is seeking a construction permit from Pennington County to expand the Perli Quarry southwest of Rapid City. County planners earlier recommended approval but area residents appealed.
At a Wednesday night hearing, representatives from the Rapid City Convention and Visitors Bureau, the Black Hills and Badlands Tourism Association and others asked the board to deny the permit.
Opponents fear spoiled scenic views, an increase in traffic and harm to the environment. Croell says it's complied with all state and local laws.
The County Commission postponed a decision on the permit until at least March 15.
