Today, November 3 couldn't be a more important day, not just in South Dakota, but in the whole United States and perhaps the entire world.

You see, today is National Sandwich Day.

The sandwich is so versatile. Lunch, dinner, or snack, the sandwich is great as a meal or just a bridge between meals.

When I was in grade school, my mom used to make peanut butter and jelly sandwiches for my lunch. I wasn't fond of the regular butter slices that she would put on it though. She would also make Fluffernutter sandwiches, which turns out is also South Dakota's favorite sandwich.

As an adult, I still enjoy a good PB&J sandwich but without the butter of course. I also like thin-sliced turkey sandwiches on white bread with Miricle Whip. How about a Grilled Cheese sandwich? That's hard to beat. And let's not forget about the American classic, the Cheeseburger.

What is the origin of the sandwich?

According to National Day Calendar, the sandwich is thought to be named after John Montagu, 4th Earl of Sandwich. Montagu claimed to be the inventor of the sandwich back in 1718. The legend says that when Montagu was hungry, he would have his servants serve up slices of meat between bread slices. Sounds good to me.

So no matter what you do today, try to find some time to enjoy a nice sandwich and thank the Earl of Sandwich for his great creation.

Oh, and by the way, it's also Election Day.
