HOUGHTON, S.D. (AP) — A moose was struck and killed by a vehicle in northeastern South Dakota's Brown County.

Sheriff Mark Milbrandt tells the American News that whoever hit the moose Tuesday night didn't stop. He says the vehicle might have been a semitrailer, based on debris at the scene.

State Game, Fish and Parks conservation officer Nick Cochran says there usually are a couple of reports of moose in the region each year. A vehicle struck one of the animals near Roscoe two years ago.

Meat from the moose killed near Houghton this week was donated to a hunger relief charity.
