The Midwest States of Iowa, Minnesota, and South Dakota all have some of the harshest winters in the country, but according to a new list from Thrillist, Minnesota has it the worst.

All three states landed in the top ten, with Iowa coming in at number six, South Dakota landing at number five, and the state of Minnesota was named the second worst state for winter in the entire United States.

Here's what Thrillist has to say about Minnesota Winters:

To think of the generally cheerful brood of Nordic-bred people being the runners-up in any sort of contest of misery seems downright crazy. But beneath those adorable don'tcha knows, we feel that there must be some deep, dark languor. How can you remain so upbeat in these conditions? Parts of northern Minnesota see up to 170 inches of snow in the winter, and it can get down to negative 60 degrees—a temperature at which frostbite can occur in fewer than five minutes.

You may be thinking of Alaska, right? Well, according to Thrillist, that's not the case.

The great state of North Dakota takes the top spot. Not only is it ranked as the coldest state in the lower 48, but it's also so windy and has so few trees, that any time there's a storm, it just blows all over the place.
