For Sioux Falls residents that are not aware of the current weather conditions, it's windy and more snow is on the way. Sioux Falls and the surrounding area are currently under a blizzard warning that is active until midday on Thursday.

The National Weather Service in Sioux Falls and our partners at Dakota News Now have been actively keeping the community informed about the latest conditions. Travel is not advised for Wednesday, which is why the Sioux Area Metro (S.A.M.) is cancelling all rides for the day.

In a recent press release, officials with the Sioux Area Metro explain driving conditions are not ideal for riders or the bus drivers. The bus service even suspended rides on Wednesday morning as they began to navigate  the storm path for the day. General Manager Robert Speeks with Sioux Area Metro released this statement:

“With blizzard conditions forecast through the rest of the day, we anticipate travel will become increasingly difficult and potentially dangerous for SAM’s drivers and passengers. As such, we are canceling service to ensure our team and passengers’ safety.”

Will Sioux Area Metro resume operations on Thursday, February 23rd? Officials will "assess weather and road conditions later this evening to determine any necessary adjustments to schedules or routes" for Thursday.

The message is pretty clear for today: If you don't have to travel outside of your home, please stay inside. Driving in dangerous winter weather conditions is not safe. However if you have to leave your home, check out the current road conditions by visiting the SD 511 website.
