Just In: South Dakota State Penitentiary Inmate Assaults Worker
Employees at the South Dakota State Penitentiary in Sioux Falls are feeling a little uneasy on this New Year's Eve day.
Our news partners at Dakota News Now received an exclusive that a food service worker with the South Dakota State Penitentiary was assaulted by an inmate. The incident happened on Sunday morning December 31st.
Multiple sources confirm that an inmate "attacked an Aramark female employee in the meat cooler in the kitchen of the Jameson Annex." This assault occurred around 8 AM on New Year's Eve morning. Thankfully, a correctional officer rushed into action after the officer found the inmate "on top of the employee, putting her in a chokehold. The correctional officer pulled the inmate off of the employee." The female employee was taken to the hospital shortly after the assault.
The Department of Corrections confirmed to Dakota News Now this is an ongoing investigation. At the time of this post, the Jameson Annex was currently on lockdown and inmate visits were canceled after the the assault. A correctional officer tells Dakota News Now that this attack is very concerning to everyone who works at the South Dakota State Penitentiary:
