(AP) - Cajun and country musician Jimmy C. Newman has died.

A publicist for the Grand Ole Opry says Newman died in Nashville on Saturday after a brief illness. He was 86.

Newman last performed at the Opry two and a half weeks ago. His hits include "Blue Lonely Winter," "A Lovely Work of Art" and "A Fallen Star" in the 1950s and '60s. His theme song was "Alligator Man."

A public memorial service will be held Wednesday at Nashville's Ryman Auditorium.
