A Wild Water Buffalo on the Loose in Pleasant Hill, Iowa

On Saturday, Pleasant Hill police received an unusual call about an animal wandering in the road. When officers arrived, they found not just any animal but a full-grown water buffalo. Yes, you read that right—a water buffalo. The animal's owner informed the police that the buffalo was aggressive, making the situation even more complicated.

Things quickly went from strange to dangerous. As animal rescue teams and police officers attempted to capture and contain the buffalo, the animal’s aggressive nature became evident. The buffalo charged at the officers, prompting one officer to fire a shotgun round, injuring the animal. The wounded water buffalo managed to escape and is still on the loose.

Police, armed with drones and ATVs, are working around the clock to locate the injured buffalo. Experts in water buffalo behavior have also been called in to assist. Despite their best efforts, the massive animal remains at large.

So, what should you do if you spot this rogue water buffalo? Pleasant Hill Police have made it clear: “DO NOT APPROACH IT!” Water buffaloes can weigh up to 2,650 pounds and are known for their strength and unpredictability. Even though this particular buffalo appears smaller than average, it still poses a significant threat, especially in its injured and agitated state.

What to Do if You Encounter the Water Buffalo

  • Stay Calm and Keep Your Distance: If you see the water buffalo, do not try to approach or capture it yourself. The animal is already injured and aggressive, which makes it even more unpredictable.
  • Alert the Authorities: Contact the Pleasant Hill Police immediately if you spot the buffalo. Your information could help them safely locate and contain the animal.
  • Keep Pets and Children Indoors: Until the buffalo is captured, it’s a good idea to keep pets and young children inside to avoid any unwanted encounters.
