The current closure on I-90 will be extended to Sioux Falls at 5 p.m. (CT) on Thursday, Dec. 22, 2022.
Due to continued high winds causing near zero visibility and drifting snow, along with ongoing issues with stranded motorists, SDDOT anticipates the I-90 closure to remain in place through Thursday and into Friday, Dec. 23, 2022.
Officials will continually assess conditions to determine when I-90 can be reopened safely. Secondary State Highways: In addition to the I-90 closure, motorists are reminded that many No Travel Advisories and Road Impassable conditions are in place on state highways throughout the central and western parts of the state.
Be prepared for changing weather conditions with this storm system as it moves across the area. Significantly reduced visibilities and blizzard-like conditions, along with extreme wind chills, make travel very dangerous. Due to the strong winds and heavy drifting, the South Dakota Department of Transportation has closed Interstate 90 from Rapid City to Chamberlain.
Motorists are asked to avoid travel due to the extremely serious weather conditions and rapidly deteriorating roads. For the latest on road and weather conditions, please visit https://sd511.org or dial 511.
Blizzard-like conditions are being observed throughout South Dakota.
