Sioux Falls Saturation Patrol Nets Over 180 Citations in May

Over 180 motorists are going to have to cough up some cash after falling victim to a Sioux Falls speeding and racing saturation patrol earlier this month.

Dakota Now News is reporting that 27 different officers from multiple law enforcement agencies issued over 180 citations and made over 20 arrests during a speeding and racing saturation patrol that took place on Saturday, (May 3) in the city.

I think almost every Sioux Falls resident can agree that street racing has become a real problem within the city. As a result, the Sioux Falls Police Department has developed a strategy to crack down on lead-foot drivers who make a habit of reckless driving.

Sgt. Joel Dalton with the Sioux Falls PD, told Dakota News Now, "Most of the officers who participated in the saturation patrol said it was very productive, but they felt the town was quiet once several people saw the amount of manpower that was on the streets.”

According to Dakota News Now, officers believe many of the groups that like to participate in street racing got tipped off, and the police were going to be conducting a saturation patrol that day. Consequently, the total number of speeding motorists may have been down.

During this month's saturation patrol, five or six citations were issued for going 26 miles per hour over the speed limit, which, by the way, were the fastest speeds recorded throughout the evening.

The Sioux Falls Police Department has made plans to partner with other local law enforcement agencies to conduct a total of five saturation patrols between March and August.
