Sure, Tom Brady might be on your TV right now barking out “hut, hut, hut” as part of a big national ad push ahead of the Big Game, but out here in the real world, the Hut itself is in a bit of a rut.

Pizza Hut’s parent company, Yum Brands, announced on Wednesday, February 4, that another round of store closures is on the way nationwide. And unfortunately, it’s not just a handful of locations getting benched.

According to Dakota News Now, roughly 250 more underperforming Pizza Hut restaurants across the country are set to close. That’s about 3% of the chain’s total locations.

What's the reason?

Plain and simple: it's declining sales. While Pizza Hut still has plenty of fans, especially those loyal to Stuffed Crust and the Meat Lovers pizza, like me, the brand continues to struggle to keep pace with fast-moving competitors like Domino’s, who seem to deliver hot pies before you even get off the phone.

As for Sioux Falls, there’s no word yet on whether any local Pizza Hut locations will be included in this latest round of closures. Right now, the city is already down to five locations, with two of those being Pizza Hut Express spots.

Longtime locals might remember when grabbing a Pizza Hut pie meant sitting down under those iconic red lamps. That era officially ended in September of 2020 here in Sioux Falls when the West 12th Street location closed, marking the end of the last dine-in Pizza Hut here in the Sioux Empire. Before that, the 26th Street and Sycamore Avenue dine-in restaurant closed back in July of 2017.

Since then, Pizza Hut has leaned hard into smaller, carry-out-focused stores, and that’s exactly what we have left in Sioux Falls today. The remaining locations are all about delivery, curbside pickup, and grabbing your order on the go, perfect for game nights, snow days, and those evenings when you have no desire to cook.

Pizza Hut is best known for its Meat Lovers, Stuffed Crust Pizza, and its signature wings and pasta. The type of comfort food that many of us grew up on in the 70s, 80s, and 90s.

This next wave of Pizza Hut closures is expected to roll out during the first half of 2026.
