I was really hoping that we wouldn't need to have this conversation again this year, after all, it is officially spring now, and we should be talking about putting away our snow shovels for the year, not dragging them out.

It would be nice to start focusing on getting the lawn mower serviced and ready to roll for the spring and summer lawn mowing season, right?

Not when you live in South Dakota. Old Man Winter doesn't like to leave this part of the country until late April, and some years he'll hang around until early May.

Need proof, look no further than this weekend's forecast. Much of South Dakota is under a Winter Storm Watch. Here in Sioux Falls the folks at Dakota News Now are saying we could see anywhere from 3 to 4 inches of snow starting this weekend through early next week.

That means you better keep that trusty old snow shovel of yours on standby.

Snow shoveling can be a risky proposition for some people any time of the year, especially during the spring with the wet heavy snowfalls we tend to get most of the time here in South Dakota.

If you're getting up there in age, or perhaps you're not in the best of shape any longer, you probably shouldn't be shoveling period!

That begs the question, at what age should a person hang up their snow shovel for good?

According to an article in the Chicago Sun Times, the majority of the doctors interviewed recommend you hand that snow pusher to someone younger once you hit that (45-55) year old age range.

Let's be honest, the great majority of us over the age of 45 are no longer what one might consider to be physical specimens. That's why it's a very good idea to slip Timmy down the block a twenty and let him do the heavy lifting from now on. That, or give some serious consideration into buying a snowblower for yourself to make the job of snow removal a heck of a lot easier in your advanced age.

Basically, if you've reached the age where your idea of a strenuous workout is getting up off the couch to grab another cold beer and a bag of chips, it's probably time you surrender your snow shoveling title for good.

Stay safe out there my snow shoveling friends!
