Drought is hitting corn fields hard in parts of South Dakota. But salvaging the crop for livestock feed is a good option.

Chopping drought-stressed corn for silage is hands-down the best method for harvest, while bailing might be the worst. Nitrate potential in drought-stressed crops can also be a challenge and baling does little to combat the nitrates.

A South Dakota State University Extension expert has some suggestions.
