Garth Brooks Recalls Another Humbling Moment With President Jimmy Carter
Garth Brooks wants you to know President Jimmy Carter is doing well after brain surgery on Tuesday (Nov. 12). The singer and 2019 CMA Entertainer of the Year nominee came with insider knowledge and a great memory hours after the former president's surgery ended.
Talking to Taste of Country prior to the 2019 CMA Awards, Brooks shared news confirmed by the Carter Center Twitter page before reflecting on a moment that happened during a Habitat for Humanity Carter Work Project build in New Orleans, after Hurricane Katrina. That was Brooks and wife Trisha Yearwood's first build, and they've made helping Habitat for Humanity a yearly tradition since, including in 2019 in Nashville.
“(I) Walk in the tent and he gets up. I say ‘Mr. President you don’t have to stand for me,'" Brooks begins. "He goes ‘I’m not standing for you, Garth’ and he takes his hat off and hugs Ms. Yearwood. He adores her, worships her."
Previously, while talking to Ellen DeGeneres, Brooks shared a memory where President Carter caught him resting on the job and jabbed him with, "Do you need something to do, Garth?"
“Jimmy calls Trisha his second favorite Georgia peach," the "Dive Bar" singer continues. "Ms. Rosalynn always takes care of Ms. Yearwood. Just seeing those three together, because that’s what Trisha grew up on ... President Carter told everybody in Georgia you could be whatever you wanted to be, and he proved it.”
