BROOKINGS, S.D. (AP) - South Dakota State University is holding its first-ever fall powwow this weekend.

The powwow will be held Saturday and Sunday at the Swiftel Center in Brookings. Dancers will compete in a variety of categories.

While the SDSU powwow has been a tradition for more than 20 years, this is the first time it is taking place in the fall.

Scott Fleming of the American Indian Education and Cultural Center on campus says the event will offer a way to welcome back students and their families to the school.

He says the powwow is a social gathering for everyone to take part in.
