Feeding South Dakota Planning Mobile Food Distribution in October

There's a big change coming in the way Feeding South Dakota will help to get food in the hands of those in need here in the Sioux Empire starting in October.

Beginning Tuesday (October 13), Feeding South Dakota will make a shift to neighborhood food distributions.

Jennifer Stensaas, with Feeding South Dakota, told Dakota News Now, "We’ve long wanted to be able to go to where hunger lives. We’ll be going to five different locations starting October 13th. We’ll be at Good News Church, Hillcrest, Faith United Methodist Church, Laura B. Anderson, and King of Glory.”

Up until now, Feeding South Dakota had been hosting community food distributions in Sioux Falls at seven different locations throughout the city. That change came about when they were forced to close the doors to their main distribution center to the public due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

As Dakota News Now reports, Feeding South Dakota did their final community food distribution on Tuesday (September 29). Over 1000 cars waited in line at the Wells Fargo Operations Center in Sioux Falls to receive much-needed food and supplies for them and their families.

During the community distributions, workers would place food in boxes inside the cars of those waiting in line. The whole distribution procedure was conducted with COVID-19 safety protocols in place to help ensure the safety of the people in need and the workers on duty.

This new mobile neighborhood food distribution plan starting in October will help to make things easier for those in need. One of the big reasons why is because food distribution centers will be moving to area neighborhoods throughout the community. The change should help to make it easier for some folks to attend. Often times it was difficult for some individuals to make it to a centralized location because they didn't have a ride, or various health concerns prevented them from being able to easily access a food pick up site that was located quite a distance from where they lived.

Moving the food distribution locations into area neighborhoods should help to alleviate some of those concerns.

According to Dakota News Now, this new plan still presents somewhat of a challenge for Feeding South Dakota, as they are still in need of additional volunteers to help at the mobile distribution locations.
