Dolly Parton’s ‘Jolene’ Gets a Strings-Only Makeover for ‘Dumplin’’ Soundtrack
Dolly Parton's iconic country hit "Jolene" has been reworked as a dramatic strings-only song for the upcoming Netflix movie Dumplin'. In the new version of the 1973 song, things get slowed way down, allowing for more of a focus on the heart-wrenching lyrics. Press play above to hear the full song.
Rolling Stone first reported that Parton shared the news of her song's makeover on her Twitter account. "Jolene’s been on the prowl a long time," Parton explained, sharing a link to the track. "But she just got a makeover and I couldn’t be more excited to share the new string version with y’all!”
The movie, which is based on a bestselling novel by Julie Murphy and stars Jennifer Aniston, is the story of a plus-sized girl who enters a beauty pageant to show-up her former beauty queen mother. The soundtrack will feature six songs from Parton's illustrious repertoire of hits as well as six new tunes that she and Linda Perry have been developing together. Other country stars joining Parton on the Dumplin' soundtrack will include Miranda Lambert, Mavis Staples, Elle King, Alison Krauss and Rhonda Vincent.
Fans have already gotten a taste of the music that will be incorporated into the new film, including a collaboration between Parton and pop star Sia for a re-imagining of Parton's 1971 hit, "Here I Am." The full soundtrack for the project will be released on Nov. 30 on Dolly Records/RCA Nashville (Sony Music). In addition to airing the film, Netflix will also release Dumplin' in select theaters across the country later in the year.
