I grew up on the North End of Sioux Falls, one in a long line of Lalleys who still hold ground around Terrace Park. I graduated from O'Gorman High School and the University of South Dakota. Following college, I was fortunate to spend more than two decades in journalism in South Dakota and Iowa. I love the give and take of good civic discourse, history and politics. To gain some sort of perspective on the world, I try to read books, primarily fiction for true perspective. My musical tastes were formed primarily obscure -- to most people -- pop and punk music from the '80s and '90s, though in truth any sort of jangly, smart pop music can get my attention.

Trump Administration Not Rooted in American Principles of Freedom [OPINION]
I’m increasingly disturbed by the administration of President Donald Trump. That’s not a particularly novel or inspired statement, to be sure. The events over the past few days, however, have pushed my fear into a new realm.
We Live the Good Life in Sioux Falls
We all go through trying times. Ups and downs. There are days where it all seems to be for naught. That no matter what you do, you can’t get ahead, you can’t solve whatever problem is facing you, there doesn’t seem to be a way through the fog.
Thune: Trade Deals Like TPP are Good for South Dakota
President Trump is spending some quality time in Germany this weekend at the G-20 Summit. The Russian influence on the 2016 presidential election is clearly a news topic. But underlying the discussions is trade. It’s a topic that I addressed in an interview with Sen. John Thune on The Patrick Lalley Show on Thursday (July 7).
Winning Means Making Health Care Good for Entrepreneurs [OPINION]
If our health-care system ultimately isn’t good for business, particularly for small business and entrepreneurs, it’s a bad idea. Imagine the innovation that would be unleashed in this country if the potential of bankrupting health-care costs weren’t part of a talented and inspired worker’s calculus of launching a new business.
