SPEARFISH, S.D. (AP) — Developers are proposing a $210 million, 700-acre project for Spearfish that would include everything from housing to an indoor hockey arena.

The Black Hills Pioneer reports that the proposed Dakota Meadows project also would include a 322,000-square-foot shopping center, hotels, restaurants, a school and a travel center.

A study two years ago found that the city was losing nearly $200 million annually from people who shop out of town. A study last year concluded that the city needs more fields for sports and recreation.

Developer Two Bar T Ranch LLC believes its project could help meet both needs, while also generating more than $50 million in new property taxes over 20 years.

Mayor Dana Boke says the concept is exciting but more discussions are needed.
