Wynonna enlisted singer-songwriter Cass McCombs to help write her newest single, "The Child," a swirling and circular blues melody that deals in abstracts but still reflects plenty of the singer's own backstory. Press play above to listen!

Since Wynonna first came into the spotlight as part of mother-daughter duo the Judds, along with her mom, Naomi, it's difficult to listen to the new song without wondering if that backstory informs the lyrics. "The child went back to shore / And read a comic book, dropped an apple core / Discovered rock 'n' roll inside a shell / With a California goodbye, it was farewell..." she sings, in what could be a nod to the time she spent in California during her childhood, before she and Naomi moved to Tennessee.

"The Child" marks the first single Wynonna and her band, the Big Noise, have released since signing to Anti Records, where the singer found a label-mate and longtime fan in McCombs. With the track's release, the two singer-songwriters are embarking on an additional new partnership, forming a band called the Frothy Pit. That team-up will perform at the 2019 AmericanaFest.

"Like many people, I grew up listening to the Judds," McCombs states in a press release. "Needless to say, it's been a real honor to collaborate with Wynonna, co-writing 'The Child' together and stepping into the uncharted terrain of the Frothy Pit."

For her part, Wynonna says that her work with McCombs continues to remind her of her deep love for music. "Getting to work with artists like Cass McCombs has broadened my musical horizons and made me even more grateful that even after 35 years I still love the creative process," she remarks.
