Weekend Wanderings: The 312 Takes Sioux Nation!
It's no secret that I frequently mention my family and hometown during the KXRB Morning Show. The women's basketball team from my alma mater, Saint Xavier University (located in Chicago) made an appearance in Sioux City over the weekend, and I hit the road to support my Cougars!
While I was a student at Saint Joseph's College and Saint Xavier, I was the play-by-play announcer for both the men's and women's basketball teams. During my senior year at SXU, I spent a lot of time on the road with the women's team because they were so awesome! The team was even granted an automatic birth to the NAIA Tournament in Sioux City after they won the CCAC (Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference). In addition, one of my roommates, Janie was on the team. Janie is currently using her final year of eligibility while earning her Master's Degree at SXU. In other words, Janie is killing the game on and off the court.
This mini road trip was definitely a spur of the moment decision. I had no idea the team was in town until I saw this year's schedule online on Friday morning. I thought it would be a great surprise for the team and seeing their smiling faces made it all worth it!
Friday night was the team's first official game of the season. It was a CCAC/GPAC (Great Plains Athletic Conference) showdown at Briar Cliff University! The SXU Cougars dominated the court and defeated the Chargers 102-62! It was so great to see their first win of the season!
Visting the girls was like a mini-reunion. I was thrilled to see familiar friends in the Sioux Empire! With the way this team is playing, I would not be surprised to see them competing again in March at the NAIA Tournament. Until then, I'll be cheering on the Cougars from South Dakota! GO COUGS!!
