Meteorologist Matthew Dux of the National Weather Service in Sioux Falls says a major snow storm is moving into the area on Tuesday.

“We are already seeing the first signs of heavy snow getting to develop over the mid Missouri River Valley. South of South Dakota across Nebraska---they already have had heavy snow reported. The heavy snow is expected to arrive in Sioux City around day break and in Sioux Falls by toward 10:00 A.M.”

How much can we expect in Sioux Falls?

“The snow will come down very heavily. Estimates probably two to even three inches per hour through the middle of the afternoon. That will add up very quickly. Snow amounts in the Sioux Falls area could be six to eight inches by the time it’s done early Wednesday morning. The biggest concern right now is the strength of the wind.. We are going to have strong winds as high as 40 miles per hour continuing all the way into daybreak on Wednesday.”

At the Sioux Falls Street Department, Rich Stephens says his crews are prepared for the winter storm.

“We have 44 sanders out loaded up with hot stuff and blades. This shift will work till noon. At noon, we have a whole new shift coming in with blade operators. We will have motor graders as well as sanders out from noon on.”
