REDFIELD, S.D. (AP) — Voters in the Redfield School District have approved a $16 million bond issue to build a new school.

The American News reports that 62 percent of the 1,279 voters in Tuesday's election favored the project.

Superintendent Shad Storley says interest in the issue was high, with a voter turnout of almost 50 percent. He says turnout for school board elections is typically about 20 percent.

The oldest part of the existing school was built in 1917, with an addition in 1935. A detached shop and gymnasium were built in the 1970s and do not need to be replaced

Construction of the new school is expected to begin in January 2017 and will take two years to complete.

More than 600 students attend classes in the Redfield School District.
