USF Football Announces Brian Hermanson to Join the Defensive Staff
SIOUX FALLS -- University of Sioux Falls head football coach Jed Stugart has announced that highly successful coach Brian Hermanson will join the Cougars’ defensive staff. With the USF football program, Hermanson will coach defensive backs alongside coach Eric Inama.
Hermanson, a teacher at Sioux Falls Washington, has a 34-year track record of success in coaching and will join a USF program coming off its most successful season (11-1) at NCAA Division II.
As he joins the Cougars, Hermanson brings extensive experience coaching from tenures with Sioux Falls Roosevelt, Sioux Falls Storm, Riggs Academy and as head football coach for Sioux Falls Washington where he led the Warriors to six title game appearances and three unbeaten state championship teams in Class 11AA.
“We are excited that Coach Hermanson will join our staff,” said Stugart. “Brian’s record of success is impressive and he has always connected with student-athletes. Coach Hermanson is a high-quality individual that will offer our student-athletes excellent coaching and mentorship. He will fit right in with our Cougar family,” said Stugart.
Two years ago, Hermanson stepped down as head coach at Sioux Falls Washington after compiling a remarkable mark of 82-16 for a winning percentage of .837 during an eight-year run. During that period, Hermanson directed his final six teams to the state AA title game. Three of his teams (2009, 2010, 2012) finished with unbeaten records on the way to state titles. In fact, Hermanson’s teams had a four year run from 2009-2012 when they compiled a 47-3 mark, including a 27-game winning streak, with three titles.
“I look forward to the opportunity to work with Coach Stugart, his staff and the Cougars student-athletes,” said Hermanson, who sent 51 SF Washington student-athletes on to play collegiate football, including 22 at the NCAA DI level. “I really feel welcome at USF and really like the family approach and chemistry in this high quality DII program.”
In the final six years at Washington High School, his Warriors’ teams outscored opponents 39.01 to 10.05 per game. While recording an 18-3 in the playoffs in that period, his teams held a 38.4-to-13.8 ppg edge. In addition, the Warriors recorded 19 shutouts during his final six years as head coach.
During his coaching career he also served as the defensive coordinator at Sioux Falls Roosevelt and spent four years with the Sioux Falls Storm, including one year as the defensive coordinator. He has also worked with the Riggs Academy.
