SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) — The University of South Dakota is trying to attract more Native Americans to law school.

The Argus Leader reports the university in Vermillion has joined the Pipeline to Law Initiative to encourage Native Americans in South Dakota to pursue a law degree.

The initiative offers financial support for courses to prepare for the law school admission test, workshops, mentorship and outreach to elementary, middle and high schools with high Native American enrollment.

Nicholas McInerney is director of admissions at the school of law. He says the initiative gives resources to people thinking about attending law school and also to those who never considered it as an option because they lacked a role model.

The newspaper reports Native Americans make up 0.3 percent of U.S. attorneys.
