UPDATE: Sioux Falls Police provided new information regarding Tuesday night's accident that left one person dead and another man hospitalized with life threatening injuries.

The two were hit by a pickup at East Ninth Street and South Cliff Avenue.

"There was alcohol involved on all parts if you will. We know there was alcohol involved on the two individuals that were struck," said Captain Loren McManus. "There was also alcohol involved with the driver. But not to the level that there was impairment that we felt was worthy of any kind of enforcement action. That will be looked at as the investigation continues and our attorneys will take up look at that and make a final decision."

Right now, McManus says the department's reconstruction team is on the scene where the accident took place.

"Our reconstruction team will go out there and will do some mapping and try to figure out speeds and those types of things. They will piece together what actually happened to cause this tragic accident."

No charges have been filed yet against the driver.


Sioux Falls police were nearby when they when they received a call about two pedestrians that had been struck at 9th and Cliff in Sioux Falls. The incident took place on Tuesday (August 29) just after 10:00 PM.

Witnesses report CPR was performed on one of the two male pedestrians. According to Sergeant Michael Olson, both pedestrians were then taken to the hospital.

"The initial investigation revealed that two adult males were crossing Cliff Ave when they were struck by a vehicle that was headed southbound on Cliff Ave. Officers were in the area on another matter and immediately rendered emergency medical care to the two victims." said Olson.  "Once at the hospital one of the victims was pronounced deceased after efforts to save his life were unsuccessful.  The other victim was treated and admitted for life threatening injuries."

No charges have been laid against the driver of the vehicle. Names of those involved have not yet been released pending notification of relatives. Authorities intend to re-create the accident as a part of their ongoing investigation.
