WHITE LAKE, S.D. (AP) — The largest spot-check of hunters in South Dakota in 12 years turned up nearly 150 violations of game laws.

More than 50 officials with the Game, Fish and Parks Department and other agencies set up a checkpoint at an Interstate 90 rest area for 24 hours on Sunday and Monday, near White Lake.

The Daily Republic reports that more than 3,300 vehicles went through the checkpoint, with more than 1,200 hunters checked. There were 147 violations found, including illegal possession of game, unlawful transportation of game and no hunting license.

Game, Fish and Parks Law Enforcement Program Administrator Andy Alban says the last game checkpoint that large was in 2003.

He says it's rewarding to apprehend people who intentionally violate the law.
