Some South Dakota workers will get a mandatory pay raise in the new year.

On January 1, the minimum wage will increase from $9.10 to $9.30 per hour for non-tipped employees in South Dakota.

According to the South Dakota Department of Labor, yearly minimum wage increases occur in unison with the increase in the cost of living, as measured in the consumer price index.  The minimum wage cannot decrease.

The new year also brings an update to federal regulations concerning overtime pay.  According to the U.S. Department of Labor, the new law requires employers to pay overtime to workers who make less than $35,500.  The old threshold set in 2004 was $23,600.

The Labor Department estimates than an additional 1.3 million American workers will be eligible for overtime pay under the Fair Labor Standards Act
