Is Lab Grown Meat Getting Banned in South Dakota?
Lab-Grown Meat continues to be a hot-button issue around the country, including right here in South Dakota. Ever since it first became a possibility, harsh criticism has been directed at the Lab-Grown Meat industry from several angles. These detractors point to numerous factors as to why they believe it's a bad idea.
Now, the state of South Dakota is taking up the issue with House Bill 1077.

SD Lawmakers Look to Ban Lab-Grown Meat Within State's Borders
The discussion around the bill is whether Lab-Grown Meat can be considered "adulterated". What exactly IS adulterated meat in the first place though? According to the USDA:
Adulterated shall apply to any carcass, part thereof, meat or meat food product under one or more circumstances (for example: if it contains poisonous substances, pesticides, or chemicals; or if it has been prepared under insanitary conditions).
Does Lab Grown Meat (otherwise known as cell-cultured meat) fit the bill? That's what lawmakers in Pierre are debating this week.
Opponents of Cell-Cultured Meat argue ethical, economic, environmental and public perception concerns are all factors in stopping it from coming to South Dakota. Those in favor say that it offers a sustainable and safe alternative to animal agriculture.
Several U.S. States have already passed legislation to ban or severely prohibit Cell-Cultured Meat, including Alabama, Florida, Mississippi, Nebraska, Indiana, Montana and Texas.
