Sioux Falls Dog ‘Slipping Away’ After Being Returned To Shelter

There are many reasons how and why a pet ends up in a shelter. But it's a different story when a pet is returned to a local shelter. This happened to one Sioux Falls dog, and she's "losing herself."

After her new home "wasn't the right fit," Junie was returned to the Sioux Falls Area Humane Society. Ever since then, she's been waiting for someone to finally keep her.

Junie is hurting inside. She's so young and shouldn't be experiencing this type of pain. She feels abandoned. In a new heart-wrenching Facebook post, the Sioux Falls Area Humane Society staff says Junie is experiencing "stress, anxiety, and triggers."

The shelter is the one place Junie never wanted to return to, and she's not handling this well...at all.

Staff at the Sioux Falls Area Humane Society have been worried about Junie's rapid decline since she came back.

What we’re seeing right now is not who Junie is.
It’s what the kennel environment does to her.

Her liveliness is replaced by fear.
Her tolerance for dogs is shifted into defensiveness.
Her curiosity is still there, but now it shows up as her trying to be brave.

She’s pulling away.
Reacting toward dogs.
Shutting down in ways that are hard to watch.

This kind of rapid change isn’t random.
It’s environmental. It’s stress. It’s survival.

Junie has been waiting 72 days for a home.
But right now, she doesn’t need more time here.

She needs out.

Now, this doesn't mean that Junie is a bad dog or that the owners are bad people. Sometimes things don't work out.  The only thing that matters is that every pet finds the right home.
