Shantel Krebs, State Senator from Dist. 10, north of Sioux Falls, is seeking the Republican nomination for South Dakota Secretary of State.

The elected position is currently held by Jason Gant. Last week, Gant announced he is not seeking re-election.

Krebs is citing the need for the public's full faith and confidence in the operation of the office as her reason for seeking the job.

“In South Dakota, and across the nation, voting is a fundamental right. It’s the Secretary of State's(SOS) primary responsibility to make sure that process is fair for all,” said Krebs. “I’ll make sure it’s always the top priority.”

Senator Krebs has served three terms in the House, and two in the Senate. She chaired the Transportation and Agriculture committees.

“Efficiency and accuracy should be the primary business goals of the office as the SOS
is the gatekeeper of all business filings in the state,” said Krebs. “We need to keep red tape to a minimum and make filings as simple as possible so South Dakota business  people can spend more time working on their business and less time filling out paper
work.”

In June of 2014, delegates to the Republican Party Convention in Rapid City will choose the Republican nominee for the position. Democrats will have the same opportunity at their convention next summer.

The general election will be in November of 2014. The top vote getter will get the job. It is a four year position.
