Ronnie Dunn Sings George Strait, Tom Petty on ‘Re-Dunn’ [LISTEN]
Brooks & Dunn bandmate Ronnie Dunn has shared two more of the tunes included on his upcoming solo album, Re-Dunn, a collection of country and rock cover hits. This time around, the new songs are Tom Petty's "I Won't Back Down" and George Strait's "The Cowboy Rides Away."
Ever since the album's early September announcement, Dunn has shared a pair of its songs every four weeks. Each time a new pair drops, it consists of one country and one rock song that had a formative influence on the singer. This time around, Dunn shares in a press release, the first song emulates his independent streak.
"The words 'artists' and 'conformity' rarely go well together," the singer muses. "'I Wont' Back Down' was written by Tom in rebellious defiance of the corporate music business who he felt were trying to force him to conform. In the end, art won. I like that."
Of Strait's classic tune, Dunn says, "'The Cowboy Rides Away,' that was a no-brainer, the second it came on, the dance floors filled up with a sea of cowboy hats. It's a timeless classic with a great melody and infectious lyrics."
"The Cowboy Rides Away" isn't the only Strait classic to show up on the track list of Re-Dunn; he has previously shared his take on another Strait classic, "Amarillo by Morning." Other artists covered on Dunn's forthcoming project include the Hollies, the Eagles, Van Morrison, the Electric Light Orchestra, Ace and Tom T. Hall. The full album is scheduled to drop on Jan. 10, 2020.
