When you think about what could be the largest company in the state of South Dakota, Avera Health Systems or Sanford Health would certainly come to mind. Morrell's Meat packing empire perhaps? Citibank? Or the Cappuccino Cabin? OK now that was funny.

In truth, none of the above take the top honors for the Rushmore state's largest company.

According to Simplemost, who have crunched the numbers based on market value, investors, and available shares, has determined that Black Hills Corp. is the largest company in South Dakota as of 2016 with a staggering market cap of $3.17 billion. They specialize in electric utilities and their headquarters are located in Rapid City South Dakota.

Other states nearby include MDU Resources of North Dakota, Minnesota's top performer is United Health Group while the Principal Financial Group is king in Iowa. Nebraska’s Warren Buffett led Burkeshire Hathaway headquartered in Omaha takes top honors the Cornhuskers State.

Of course, Arkansas is still known for Walmart and California boasts Apple with a mind-blowing nearly $600 billion of capital worth.

Note: Number of employees were not factored into this study.
