if you've done your fair share of traveling across the United States you're probably well aware that not every city and state is as clean as the Midwest. Based on the eye test alone, bigger cities like New York, Los Angeles, Houston, and others have a significant litter problem. That being said, the Midwest isn't immune either.

According to a new survey by Lawnstarter, a number of Midwest cities made the most recent list of 'Dirtiest Cities in America', including a few surprises.

The good news? No South Dakota cities made the top of the list. However, it appears one South Dakota city stands above the rest when it comes to litter.

That's right, Sioux Falls made Lawnstarter's list, checking in at number 116, right in between Oakland, California, and Mobile, Alabama.

According to Lawnstarter, the results are based on 4 key factors: pollution ranking, infrastructure ranking, consumer satisfaction ranking, and living conditions ranking. Sioux Falls had a score of 80 when it came to pollution and a score of 71 for Infrastructure. Both of these brought the city's score down significantly.

Other nearby cities that made the list:

Lincoln, Nebraska #106, Omaha #120, Minneapolis #120, Des Moines #149, and Kansas City, Missouri #44.

And here are the top ten dirtiest in the U.S.:

  1. Houston, Texas
  2. Newark, New Jersey
  3. San Bernadino, California
  4. Detroit, Michigan
  5. Jersey City, New Jersey
  6. Bakersfield, California
  7. San Antonio, Texas
  8. Fresno, California
  9. Oklahoma City, Oklahoma
  10. Yonkers, New York
