Olivia Newton-John, who won the hearts of moviegoers in her role as Sandy in the 1975 hit musical Grease opposite John Travolta, says that she is confident that her second fight against cancer will have a positive outcome. Diagnosed in May with a metastasized tumor in her sacrum, the 68-year-old singer -- and her loved ones -- have responded with hope.

“I am really grateful for and touched by the worldwide outpouring of love and concern ... I am feeling good and enjoying total support from my family and friends, along with a team of wellness and medical practitioners both here in the U.S. and at my Olivia Newton-John Cancer Wellness and Research Centre in Melbourne, Australia,” Newton-John says in a statement to People. “I’m totally confident that my new journey will have a positive success story to inspire others!"

Adds Newton-John's husband, John Easterling, “We both have the same unshakable belief that she’s going to have a wonderful success story. We’re not trying to be positive. We have an absolute knowingness that we can turn this around.”

Newton-John is undergoing photon radiation therapy as well as several natural treatments at her home in Southern California, and Easterling says that his wife has already experienced a vast improvement in the pain that originally caused her to cancel tour dates. Friends and family, the first people that Newton-John broke the news to, have rallied around the artist.

“She’s not naive and doesn’t get immobilized,” says Leeza Gibbons, a longtime friend. “She finds light in the darkest corners and just always has.”

The Olivia Newton-John Cancer Wellness and Research Centre opened in 2012. Newton-John has been an advocate for cancer awareness since being diagnosed with breast cancer in 1992; at that time, she underwent a partial mastectomy and breast reconstruction before being declared cancer free.

Newton-John is, of course, best known as Sandy in Grease, but in the early ’70s, she earned accolades at the ACM Awards and CMA Awards; she also has two country Grammy Awards trophies to her name. Newton-John has recorded almost 30 albums throughout her career.
