We sure do love our pets in the Upper-Midwest. Ownership has gone up in recent years and Midwesterners are investing more in their furry friends than ever before. But have you ever wondered which type of furry friend we love the most?

For most of us, there's a line in the sand: One side is for K9s and the other for Felines. Culturally, picking one over the other can say a lot of interesting things about a state. Idaho prefers cats by a slim margin, whereas Texas takes dogs everyday of the week and then some. In Maine, their favorite dish may be lobster, but for companionship? It's cats. And Colorado loves its dogs so much, cats don't even make the list there! Maybe it has something to do with all the botanicals there?

You might think that your state leans one way or the other, but statistics have a way of surprising us, and these stats certainly do just that.

So, there you have it. Was it ever in doubt? Perhaps the most surprising stat is just how much Iowa loves its pets. The Hawkeye State outperforms both Minnesota and South Dakota in terms of pet ownership. In fact, at 46.4%, the Mount Rushmore State is among the lowest in the nation (47 out of 50).
