
How Many Billionaires Live in Minnesota, South Dakota and Iowa?
When we think of billionaires, places like Manhattan, Beverly Hills, or the Hamptons come to mind. But according to the Wall Street Journal, there are over 1,100 living throughout the U.S., living in almost every corner of the country.
Together, they're worth an astounding $5.7 trillion, and the only states without at least one billionaire are Alaska, West Virginia, and Delaware. Not surprisingly, the states with the most are: California (199), New York (136), and Florida (117), with Texas not far behind at 83.
But what about the Upper-Midwest states of Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota, and Iowa? You might be surprised at just how many billionaires live in your own backyard.

Harry H. Stine is (by far) the richest person in all of Iowa. The founder of Stine Seed (based in Adel) is worth a whopping $9.9 Billion. He was also recently listed among Forbes' 250 Greatest Innovators List.
According to the St. Cloud Times, there are currently five billionaires living in Minnesota:
- Glen Taylor ($3.4 Billion) - Founder of Taylor Corp. (printing & industrial)
- Stanley Hubbard ($1.9 Billion) - CEO of Hubbard Broadcasting
- John Macmillan ($1.6 Billion) - Cargill Family Heir
- Martha Macmillan ($1.6 Billion) - Cargill Family Heir
- Jeffrey Michael ($1.2 Billion) - Data Management Tech
South Dakota is home to one billionaire, T. Denny Sanford. Sanford built his wealth in the credit card and banking industry (owning First Premier Bank) and is also a major philanthropist in the region. His wealth is estimated at $2.4 billon.
Gary Tharaldson is North Dakota's lone billionaire. He's worth around $1.2 Billion and made his fortune in the hospitality industry with Tharaldson Companies.
According to several reports, 4 billionaires call Nebraska "home". But one stands above the rest. They are:
- Warren Buffett ($148 billion) - Owner, Berkshire Hathaway
- Henry Davis ($2.4 billion) - Owner, Greater Omaha Packing Company (Beef)
- Daniel Hirschfeld ($2.3 billion) - Owner, The Buckle (Clothing, Fashion)
- Michael Dunlap & Family ($1.2 billion) - Owner, Nelnet (Loan Servicing)
Wisconsin has the most billionaires in the Upper-Midwest. Here's a list of the 7 wealthiest individuals in the state:
- Diane Hendricks ($22 billion) - Co-Founder, ABC Supply (Building Supplies)
- John Menard Jr. ($22 billion) - Founder, Menards (Home Improvement Retailer)
- Judy Faulkner ($7.8 billion) - Founder and CEO, Epic Systems (Electronic Health Record Software Company)
- Helen Johnson-Leipold ($4.9 billion) - Chairman and CEO, Johnson Outdoors (Outdoor Recreation Company)
- S. Curtis Johnson ($4.8 billion) - Heir to SC Johnson (Manufacturer, Household Cleaning, Storage Company)
- H. Fisk Johnson ($4.8 billion) - Chairman/CEO SC Johnson (Manufacturer, Household Cleaning, Storage Company)
- James Cargill II ($4.5 billion) Heir to the Cargill Company (Agribusiness)
