Lucinda Williams Plans 20th Anniversary ‘Car Wheels on a Gravel Road’ Tour
Lucinda Wiliams' critically acclaimed fifth studio album, Car Wheels on a Gravel Road, turns 20 years old in 2018, and the singer is celebrating the occasion with a 12-stop, 10-city tour. Kicking off in Collingswood, N.J., the tour will spotlight the milestone album with a top-to-bottom performance of the record at each show, along with select hits spanning across her extensive career.
While Car Wheels on a Gravel Road was released in June of 1998, Williams actually began recording the project three years prior, in 1995. The album's creation was fraught with complications and delays, in part due to the friction between the artists and and her long-time producer and guitar player, Gurf Morlix. Williams shelved nearly an entire album's worth of songs, took her recording process to Nashville, re-opened the project and began recording again.
When the album finally came out, however, it was met with praise from fans and critics alike, garnering the title of Best Album of 1998 from the Village Voice's Pazz & Jop critics poll, along with a Grammys trophy for Best Contemporary Folk Album. A heavy hitter of the Americana canon, Car Wheels on a Gravel Road features guest appearances from Steve Earle and Emmylou Harris.
Most tickets for the upcoming Car Wheels on a Gravel Road Tour will go on sale on Aug. 23 at 7 PM local time. For more information, and to stay up to date about show information, visit Williams' website. See below for a complete list of tour dates.
