You might associate coffee with Seattle, but this Minnesota city likes its Pumpkin Spice Lattes more than any other in the entire country.

It seems hard to envision now, given how popular Starbucks Coffee Company's Pumpkin Spice Latte (PSL) has become, but there was a time not all that long ago when that classic fall beverage didn't exist.

According to this Starbucks Stories article, the PSL was first introduced 21 years ago, back in 2003. The Seattle-based coffee chain had introduced its Peppermint Mocha as a holiday-themed seasonal drink the year before and was looking to expand its offerings.

After much research and testing, Starbucks said, they kept coming back to the pumpkin flavor, and after much tinkering, the Pumpkin Spice Latte (which they originally called the 'Fall Harvest Latte' before deciding to change the name to the now-familiar PSL) was born. And the rest, as they say, is history.

The August 22, 2024, PSL release date marks the earliest Starbucks sold its now-famous fall beverage. And while you might think their home base of Seattle would be the city that loves it the most, that honor actually goes to a city right here in the Land of 10,000 Lakes.

According to a new survey by Roasty Coffee, Minnesota's largest city, Minneapolis, is actually ranked first on the list of cities where the PSL is most popular. To come up with this conclusion, Roasty Coffee said they looked at Google search volumes and found that September is the most popular time of year for pumpkin spice latte, with the term generating an average of 141,625 searches.

And PSL-lovers here in the Bold North city of Minneapolis are responsible for a decent amount of those, Roasty Coffee said, noting that 169 searches for PSL out of 100,000 are conducted in Minneapolis.

According to Roasty Coffee, here are the Top Ten Cities Where Pumpkin Spice Lattes are Most Popular in 2024:

  1. Minneapolis, MN
  2. Miami, FL
  3. Atlanta, GA
  4. Seattle, WA
  5. Denver, CO
  6. Sacramento, CA
  7. Las Vegas, NV
  8. Austin, TX
  9. Raleigh, NC
  10. Tampa, FL

If you think August might be just a *tad* bit early for a fall beverage, you're not alone. While PSL is insanely popular, some Minnesotans say they'd rather the PSL craze wait until at least after the Minnesota State Fair concludes its run on Labor Day.
