We are pretty much all in agreement that gas is a lot more expensive than we'd like it to be.

But it could be worse.

In the Tri-State (South Dakota, Iowa, Minnesota) area, we are consistently paying below the national average to fill up our tanks.

According to AAA, drivers around here are paying anywhere from 26 to 31 cents under the going rate across the country for a gallon of regular gas ($3.58).

So where is the cheapest gas in our area?

According to GasBuddy, Iowa checks in as the biggest bargain with an average price per gallon of regular gas currently at $3.27.

At last report, the cheapest gas in the Hawkeye State can be found at RanCo in Defiance - $2.24 per gallon.

In South Dakota, the statewide average for a gallon of regular gas is slightly higher at $3.30 per gallon.

At last report, the cheapest gas in the Mount Rushmore State can be found at Costco and Sam's Club in Sioux Falls - $2.89 per gallon.

But since both of those locations are for members only, the distinction of the least expensive gas for the general public in the state can be found at Sinclair in Hartford - $2.99 per gallon.

Drivers in Minnesota are paying an average of $3.32 for a gallon of regular gas.

At last report, the cheapest gas in the North Star State can be found at Lucky Seven General Store in Cloquet - $2.87 per gallon.

To find out more about how has the price of gas changed throughout the years, Stacker ran the numbers on the cost of a gallon of gasoline for each of the last 84 years. Using data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics (released in April 2020), we analyzed the average price for a gallon of unleaded regular gasoline from 1976 to 2020 along with the Consumer Price Index (CPI) for unleaded regular gasoline from 1937 to 1976, including the absolute and inflation-adjusted prices for each year.
