When it comes to white-knuckling it behind the wheel, one South Dakota stretch of road is considered to be one of the most terrifying drives in the United States.

Rough Maps took to the nation's highways and byways and came up with 20 American Roads That Will Rightfully Scare You, featuring everything from treacherous mountain switchbacks to vanishing bridges.

At number 12 on the list is a 14-mile stretch of South Dakota Highway 87 in the Black Hills, better known as Needles Highway.

The scenic drive features towering granite spires, pine forests, and tight tunnels like the Needles Eye. The road also features a trio of tunnels, including the extremely narrow Needle's Eye Tunnel (8' wide by 9'9" high) and Iron Creek Tunnel (8'9" wide by 10'10" high).

The road, part of the 68-mile Peter Norbeck National Scenic Byway, which also includes the Iron Mountain Road and the Wildlife Loop Road, is open mid-April to mid-October and is included with the $20 entry fee to Custer Sate Park.

Rough Maps' description of the road:

'Needles Highway is one of the most picturesque drives in Custer State Park, but those falling rock formations make for some tight turns and passages. Known as the "pigtail" bridges and tunnels, you'll have to fold in your side mirrors to pass.'

LOOK: See how much gasoline cost the year you started driving

To find out more about how has the price of gas changed throughout the years, Stacker ran the numbers on the cost of a gallon of gasoline for each of the last 84 years. Using data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics (released in April 2020), we analyzed the average price for a gallon of unleaded regular gasoline from 1976 to 2020 along with the Consumer Price Index (CPI) for unleaded regular gasoline from 1937 to 1976, including the absolute and inflation-adjusted prices for each year.

Read on to explore the cost of gas over time and rediscover just how much a gallon was when you first started driving.
