Many Sioux Falls residents wonder why our growing city hasn't attracted a Trader Joe's yet...how come?

If you've ever wished you could grab those famous Everything But The Bagel seasoning or Two-Buck Chuck without a road trip, you're not alone.

The answer comes down to Trader Joe's business model.

Unlike other grocery chains that rapidly expand, Trader Joe's grows deliberately and strategically.

They typically target markets with populations exceeding 500,000 and focus on areas with high population density.

Sioux Falls, while thriving with a population over 200,000, simply doesn't yet meet Trader Joe's typical demographic thresholds.

The company also considers factors like proximity to distribution centers, which currently serve their existing locations more efficiently than branching into the northern Great Plains.

Additionally, Trader Joe's looks for markets with specific consumer profiles: areas with higher concentrations of college-educated residents who align with their specialty food offerings and price points.

While Sioux Falls checks many boxes as a growing economic hub, we're competing against hundreds of other cities making similar cases.
