Video Blowing Up Historic Ft. Pierre Bridge In South Dakota

Crowds gathered to witness the final moments of the historic Missouri River bridge connecting Pierre and Fort Pierre as it was blown up by demolition crews. 

The Pierre, South Dakota bridge built in 1926 was on the National Register of Historic Places.

The steel framework, which had stood since the 1960s, came down in a controlled explosion that attracted lots of onlookers eager to witness this rare event.

Authorities temporarily rerouted traffic for approximately 30 minutes on Monday morning.

Spectators watched as the precisely executed blast sent the massive steel girders dropping into the Missouri River.

The visual spectacle was followed by rising black smoke from the explosives and, moments later, the physical sensation of the blast's shockwave.
