We're right at the start of summer, and with that season comes some unwelcome guests: mosquitoes, flies, gnats, ticks, and more.

Consumer Reports has done the work to find the best insect repellents and report on them. Boy, I wouldn't want to be one of the volunteers for this yearly study. I mean, how do you resist the urge to swat?

Choosing the best insect repellents really does matter when it comes to disease-carrying mosquitoes and ticks.

Some of the best products can provide almost a full day of protection.

The top performers have one of three important ingredients, so it is important to read the label on your chosen product. All are safe when used as directed.

  1. DEET - 15 to 30% concentration is plenty
  2. Oil of Lemon Eucalyptus - Products that did well in the CR tests had 30%
  3. Picaridin- The products CR recommends mostly have 20%

Here are Consumer Reports Top 10 Insect Repellents

Consumer Reports also mentions in this report that you might as well skip products like citronella candles (my mom used to swear by citronella - everything), wristband repellents, clip-on insect repellent fans, and DEET-free "natural" products.
