When we look back at the year 2024, the city of Sioux Falls set a record that we aren't going to be proud of, a significant jump in homicides.

In 2023 there were a total of 2 homicides reported for the entire year in Sioux Falls, so far in 2024, there have been 14 to date.

Sioux Falls Public Information Officer Sam Clemens told Dakota News Now, that the jump in homicides is an anomaly, there is no connecting factor to the recent increase.

According to Clemens, “Some of them may be domestic related. We’ve seen in the past, drugs or alcohol are a factor. Sometimes, it’s just a disagreement between people that don’t like each other. So, we’ve seen a whole different list of reasons why they happen."

The good news is that before the most recent homicide this past weekend, there was only one unsolved homicide from 2024.

That lone unsolved homicide stems back to September 4th, when a woman was shot and killed in the 6000 block of West Tanager Place. The investigation into that murder is still underway.

Dakota News Now reports that when it comes to homicides in East River South Dakota, there were 30 during the calendar year of 2022. Last year, that number dropped to 22. So far this year, there have been 32 homicides in eastern South Dakota.

Law Enforcement's primary objective in every case is always to find the people responsible and hold them accountable.

People Say They Hate These 7 Things About Sioux Falls the Most

In the last few years, I've had the opportunity to live in another state after living in Sioux Falls for a decade. Then late last year I moved back to the SooFoo, and I am super happy to have returned.

Sioux Falls has just about everything I like. It's big enough to have lots of opportunities for work and recreation. But, it's also not so big that I feel lost in an urban wasteland.

Being on the western edge of the 'Midwest' and the eastern edge of the 'Western Frontier' we've got a nice balance of the individualistic pioneer spirit and a strong 'We're in this together' attitude.

But, of course, not everything is perfect. People have complaints. On the social network Reddit, people have even listed their complaints about Sioux Falls. Specifically, the things that hate about living here.
