If you live in Sioux Falls, you're very familiar with this drill: grab your keys, buckle up, check the traffic, and hope a crop of orange cones isn't waiting for you somewhere along your route.

We are in the heart of Sioux Falls road construction season right now, and a few more projects are slated to start again this week.

Several new road and utility projects are getting underway on Monday, meaning drivers around the Sioux Empire will have a few more closures and detours to deal with.

Here's where you'll want to pay attention to this week:

If your travels take you down Southwestern Avenue near Scheels this week, expect to see construction activity.

According to Dakota News Now, MidAmerican Energy is replacing a gas service line, resulting in the closure of the northbound outside lane of South Western Avenue between the south entrance of Scheels and West 42nd Street.

The east sidewalk along South Western Avenue will also be closed during the project. Pedestrians will be detoured to the west sidewalk.

The good news? This one won't be going on too long. The project is expected to be completed by the end of the day Friday, August 14.

Another Sioux Falls construction project that will be testing drivers' patience this week is happening on the city's west side.

West 51st Street will be closed between South West Avenue and South Western Avenue through the end of the day on Wednesday, August 19.

The south sidewalk in the area will also be closed while utility work is completed.

If 51st Street is part of your normal commute, it may be worth finding another route for the next several days rather than discovering the closure at the last possible second.

And you know we're in the throes of a busy construction season when the city holds a Construction Open House. That is exactly what will be happening on Wednesday, August 12, from  5:30 PM to 6:30 PM at the Harrisburg North Middle School, 2201 West 95th Street.

The meeting will focus on the upcoming Southeast Basins Sanitary Sewer Expansion project along Lincoln County Highway 106, also known as 271st Street.

This isn't a quick weekend project. Dakota News Now reports that construction is expected to begin in late August or early September and continue through 2027.

The open house will give residents a chance to learn more about the project, including planned detour routes and the construction schedule. Members of the project team will also be available to answer questions and speak with residents one-on-one.
