The Iowa pyramids were built in Hickory Grove Cemetery near the town of Avery, Iowa which is southeast of Des Moines.

The tallest of the 3 Great Pyramids Of Avery, Iowa is 14 feet high and stands with the other two structures in the back of the Hickory Grove Cemetery.

They were meant to be used as Tombs for Axel Peterson and a friend after they died.

It was the wish of Axel Peterson that he be buried sitting up in one pyramid facing his friend who would be interred in another of the pyramids.

As it turns out after Axel's death his wishes to be buried in his pyramid mausoleum were not honored.

Axel and his friend were sadly buried in totally different cemeteries miles away from each other. To this day the tombs remain empty.
